The Mease Spencer earns "Good" in first ever Ofsted Inspection

Inspectors rated the primary academy “Good” in all areas and “Outstanding” in personal development.

Ofsted inspectors rated The Mease Spencer Academy as “Good” in its first ever inspection, with “Outstanding” personal development.

Inspectors praised the academy’s “high ambitions”, emphasis on reading, and “exemplary personal development programme”. “No stone is left unturned to provide pupils with a wealth of experiences that extend well beyond the curriculum,” they wrote. “Pupils are exceptionally well prepared for later life.”

The Mease Spencer Academy, which opened in 2019, currently teaches children from Years 1 to 4. Ofsted inspectors described the curriculum they learn as “well-crafted”, stating, “It is clear how prior learning helps pupils take the next step to new learning.” They particularly commended the staff’s “high quality training” and strong subject knowledge, as well as the proactive support provided to children with SEND.

Further, inspectors acknowledged The Mease Spencer’s focus on early reading, which they describe as “a strength of the school”. Literacy is built into the school culture; the report states, “The joy of reading is promoted. Books are everywhere. The school library is an inviting space where pupils can cosy up and enjoy a book.”

Overall, Ofsted inspectors experienced the academy’s positive culture and values, summing it up in the report: “Pupils are full of praise for their school. They agree that behaviour is good because everyone knows the school rules of ‘ready, respectful, safe’. Kindness is the ‘golden thread’ that runs through the school. Relationships between adults and pupils are warm and nurturing. Pupils replicated this.”

“We are extremely proud of this positive outcome, which is a testament to the care and commitment of our staff, the support of our parents and carers and, of course, a celebration of our wonderful children,” said Principal Julia Hart. “As a new and growing school, we are constantly creating new systems and refining existing systems. What the inspectors saw during their visit was a true reflection of everyday life at The Mease and we are very pleased with the outcome of our inspection.”

Director of Primary Education Angela O’Brien, OBE added, “The team at The Mease Spencer has done a great job building a positive learning environment since day one of opening  We are incredibly proud of the ‘Good’ rating they have earned and excited to watch the staff and children continue to grow within their community.”
